If your lawn mower won’t start, there are some common failures that you can troubleshoot on your own. First make sure you have all the basics:
To run, your lawn mower needs to have good, clean fuel in the gas tank. If the gas is more than 30 days old, remove it. If you have a full tank of gas, you can use the old lawn mower gas in your car.
Make sure that your spark plug wire is attached to the plug.
It is a good idea to periodically take a look at your spark plug. Check the condition of the plug if the mower won’t start.
It could be fouled or oil soaked. If you are in doubt, you can just put in a new one, spark plugs are a fairly cheap part.
The other thing you can do is make sure that you are getting a spark. Put the plug wire on the spark plug and set the plug on the frame. Pull the rope to start the mower and you can see the spark. If you cannot, replace the plug.
Make sure the brake cable is functioning properly. You may have a stretched brake cable which is causing your lawn mower not to start. If you pull the brake, but you can pull the cable even more with your hand, and your mower starts, you know the cable is the culprit.
Your mower oil is critical. Make sure your oil is good quality and at the proper level.
