With little rain and Massachusetts already in a drought, it is important to know how to take care of your lawn in the hot weather during drought conditions. Lawn care and keeping your lawn healthy requires attention including watering and mowing, and it also requires properly maintained lawn equipment to make it look its best.
Always sharpen mower blades. Don’t’ cut your lawn with a dull mower blade. When you do, you in effect give your lawn “split ends”. If you cut your lawn with a dull blade, don’t cut it again to “fix it”. The leaf blades actually shred and give your green lawn a white cast. Instead, have the mower blades sharpened then give the lawn a nice trim in a few days.
Don't mow too short. It is important to mow to the proper height and not cut it all the way down to the dirt. If you remove too much grass at once, the quality of your lawn will be affected. When you cut your lawn too short, your lawn will turn brown very quickly. Rule of thumb, never take more than 1/3 of the leaf off at one time.
Always read the directions on lawn nutrients. Whether you fertilize or apply follow the directions on the bag.
Growing a nice lawn is a process, not a treatment and requires the right lawn equipment. Effort and the right yard equipment can give you a great lawn even in the summer heat.
